A COUNCILLOR has narrowly avoided jail for falsely claiming £6,500 in benefits after trying to save money for his retirement. Former Redcar and Cleveland borough councillor David Tomlin, who resigned after his shame was made public, last month, failed to declare he had £14,800 in savings.
