Labour Councillor and Deputy Council Leader (Northumberland) John Whiteman, who was also a senior member of the local police authority, was convicted and fined in 2002 for soliciting a prostitute in the red light district of Middlesbrough. The court heard Whiteman was arrested in his car as police discovered him in a “state of undress” with a lady of the night he had just paid £35 for sex.
